Overview of the National Park Service, the agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior that manages and maintains several hundred national parks, monuments, historical sites, and other designated properties of the federal government. The NPS was established in by an act of the U.S. Congress. The National Park System of the United States is the collection of physical properties owned or administered by the National Park collection includes all national parks and most national monuments, as well as several other types of protected areas of the United States.. As of January , there are units of the National Park System.

  There are 62 national parks in the United States, which includes White Sands National Park, the newest protected area as of December (formerly a national monument). For what it’s worth, this is a subset of the units managed by the National Park Service — which includes sites under different umbrellas, like National Battlefields. Trails Illustrated has mapped the National Parks for more than 25 years. The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.
